Wind Atlas of Aegean Sea with SAR data

چکیده
The Global Wind Atlas project is established to create a ”free-to-use” wind atlas of the whole globe. The modelling chain of the project includes micro-scale models and new reanalysis datasets. Local measurements are planed to be use for test and validation. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to find long term offshore measurement to make wind statistics. The main reason is the cost of setup and maintenance of an offshore mast. One of the regions which has high potential in wind resources but so far is without any long term offshore measurement is the Aegean sea. Recent developments in satellite radar technologies made it possible to use Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) for wind speed and direction measurements at offshore locations. In this study, a new technique of making wind atlases is applied to the region of Aegean Sea is presented. The method has been tested and validated in the North Sea and Baltic Sea but it is the first time it is used for a large scale Mediterranean area. The available dataset is provided by European Space Agency’s ENVISAT mission and recorded between 2002 and 2012. The presented method gives the ability to calculate the wind resource map of an offshore location including statistical parameters to be used in wind resource assessment models/software.

The wind drift motion of the water which is produced by the stress of the wind exerted upon the surface of the ocean is described by Ekmans theory (1905). Using the mean monthly values for the wind stress and SST, seasonal Ekman transport for the Persian Gulf was computed and contoured. The geostrophic winds have combined with the SST to estimate the effect of cooling due to Ekman transport o...
متن کاملSea Surface Wind Retrievals from SIR-C/X-SAR Data: A Revisit
The Geophysical Model Function (GMF) XMOD1 provides a linear algorithm for sea surface wind field retrievals for the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR). However, the relationship between the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) and the sea surface wind speed, wind direction and incidence angles is non-linear. Therefore, in this paper, XMOD1 is revisited us...

INTRODUCTION In this paper, X-band COSMO-SkyMed© Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data are first experimented as wind field forcing of coastal wind-wave oceanographic modeling for sea-wave numerical simulation. Experiments consist of numerical wave simulations of the SWAN model accomplished with respect to some relevant wave storms recorded in the test area during the winter season of 2010. The w...
متن کاملDerivation of Sea Surface Wind Directions from TerraSAR-X Data Using the Local Gradient Method
Derivation of sea surface wind direction is a key step of sea surface wind retrieval from spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. This technical note describes an implementation of the Local Gradient (LG) method to derive sea surface wind directions at a scale of a few kilometers from X-band spaceborne SAR TerraSAR-X (TS-X) data in wide swath mode. The 180 ̋ ambiguity in the derived sea ...
